About Me

Hello and welcome to my blog!

My name is Djuka Selendic and I am a tester and test manager living and working in Milwaukee, WI. I am an immigrant to the United States, hailing from Zagreb, Croatia. I’ve enjoyed a few career tracks spanning 23 years – student web designer, front-end web developer, website content manager – and I’ve learned valuable lessons in every technology track I’ve explored.

Software testing is the career I fell in love with.

I am a student of the context-driven school of testing. I believe testing is a complex human activity that cannot be automated. I believe human testers are always the ones in charge and that we can change how we test as our context calls for it.

Often, when I say this, people assume I must be anti-automation. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is no doubt that automation has the potential to help us as we test and manage testing efforts and when done in an intentional, strategic way, it can be a powerful and useful part of a testing strategy. We have the agency to think critically and make cost effective decisions on how and when to use automation to help us meet our testing missions. I think we can do this in a more thoughtful way that doesn’t only center around how to make testing valuable to us through automation or applying an “automate all of it” strategy.

There is so much more to the craft of testing. I aim to explore some of those topics in my blog.

I started my journey in software testing in 2013 at Firespring, a software development company in Lincoln, NE where I joined a team of developers responsible for supporting St. Baldrick’s Foundation. St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise money for childhood cancer research. Starting my testing career working for such an impactful client gave me lots of opportunities to learn the craft and to evolve my thinking about software.

Since then, I moved to Milwaukee, WI and I’ve worked at two other companies in lead positions while doing plenty of hands-on testing as well.

If you’re hiring, I am active on LinkedIn and I’m looking for a job!

Cheers!
